OTT Made Easy
The media landscape has evolved tremendously over the past 10 years. Digital evolved at a rapid pace and now there are some blurred lines between digital and traditional.
One major change is the way viewers watch video content. Viewers now watch what they want, when they want via OTT devices (Roku, Chromecast, Firestick, Apple TV) on Connected/Smart TV’s. Viewers can access internet streaming services both free and through subscription such as Netflix, Hulu, Tubi and Pluto.
Even for those of us in the media industry, keeping up with the newest technology is a challenge. Our goal is to provide clarity on some of the more common terms and acronyms.
Below you will find a list of terminology to help you navigate through the evolving digital video world.
Addressable TV – Still in its infancy, this will allow linear TV to have precise targeting and ad-serving by house
AVOD (Ad based Video on Demand) This allows viewers to consume content at no charge and forces them to watch commercials. (Ex. YouTube, Crackle)
CTV (Connected TV) – This refers to the TV that is connected to the internet to view content – it is either a Smart TV or connected via OTT device.
IPTV (Internet Protocol TV)- Similar to OTT however, IPTV uses a private, dedicated network to deliver more consistent service
OTT (Over the Top) – The delivery of movies and TV content via the internet. Examples of OTT mediums include Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now – uses an open unmanaged network
SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) This allows viewers to purchase a monthly package where they can consume as much content as they wish. With little to no commercials. (Ex. Netflix/ Hulu)
TVOD (Transactional Video on Demand) This allows viewers to buy just the content they want. (Ex. Google Play)
VOD (Video on Demand) This allows users to select video at the time they choose to view rather than the time the program airs on broadcast
